HELP FOR THE FAMILY | MARRIAGE – Series 2
What Does the Bible Say About Marriage?
The Purpose of Marriage
From the very beginning of human history, God established marriage as a special union between a man and a woman, designed to bring happiness and stability and to provide the foundation for family life (Genesis 1:27, 28; 2:18, 24).
God’s View of Marriage
Marriage is meant to be a permanent union. God expects husband and wife to remain loyal to each other for as long as they live (Mark 10:9).
The Bible does not approve of polygamy, same-sex relations, or couples living together without commitment (1 Corinthians 6:9; 1 Thessalonians 4:3).
Jesus confirmed that marriage should follow the original pattern set by God (Mark 10:6-8).
Separation and Divorce
The Bible encourages couples to resolve their problems rather than separate (1 Corinthians 7:10).
The only valid reason for divorce given in Scripture is adultery (Matthew 19:9). If separation or divorce occurs for any other reason, neither partner is free to remarry (Matthew 5:32; 1 Corinthians 7:11).
Civil Marriage and God’s Approval
God expects His servants to respect governmental laws regarding marriage. Registering a marriage legally shows respect for both the authorities and for God, who views marriage as a serious and lasting commitment (Titus 3:1).
Responsibilities in Marriage
Both spouses: Husband and wife must treat each other with love, respect, and faithfulness. They should meet each other’s needs and, if they have children, share the responsibility of raising them (Ephesians 5:33; 1 Corinthians 7:3; Hebrews 13:4).
Husband: Described as “head of the wife,” he is responsible for guiding the family with love, ensuring their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, and valuing his wife’s strengths and opinions (Ephesians 5:23; Colossians 3:19; Proverbs 31:11).
Wife: She is encouraged to respect her husband’s role, cooperate with him, and support his leadership. The Bible praises wives who fulfill this important role faithfully (Ephesians 5:33; Genesis 2:18; Proverbs 31:10).
Are Children Required?
No. Although God commanded some of His servants in the past to have children (Genesis 1:28; 9:1), this directive does not apply to Christians. Jesus never required His followers to become parents, and the early Christians did not impose this obligation. Having children is a personal decision for each couple.
How the Bible Strengthens Marriage
Biblical principles help couples build strong relationships and overcome challenges by teaching them to:
Show genuine love (1 Corinthians 13:4-7; Colossians 3:14)
Respect one another (Romans 12:10)
Be patient and forgiving (Ephesians 4:2, 3; 1 Peter 4:8)
Remain loyal and committed (Mark 10:9; Song of Solomon 8:7)
Work together as a team (Ecclesiastes 4:9)
Communicate well and listen carefully (James 1:19)
