How to Be Happy in Marriage — Read God’s Word
Reading the Bible can help husband and wife maintain peace in their marriage.
God Can Help You Have a Happy Marriage
“Have you not read that the one who created them from the beginning made them male and female?” — Matthew 19:4
Jehovah performed the first marriage when he created the woman and brought her to Adam. Adam was so delighted that he said:
“This is at last bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” — Genesis 2:22, 23
Just as in the beginning, Jehovah still wants couples to be happy.
Even when there is true love, husband and wife face challenges.
“But if you do marry, you have not sinned. Yet those who marry will have difficulties in life.” — 1 Corinthians 7:28
The Bible provides counsel that strengthens marriage and family.
“The orders of Jehovah are righteous; they make the heart rejoice.” — Psalm 19:8-11
1. Accept the Role Jehovah Gave You
“The husband is head of his wife.” — Ephesians 5:23
The husband should care for his wife with tenderness and dignity.
“Husbands, continue loving your wives, just as the Christ also loved the congregation.” — Ephesians 5:25-29
The wife should deeply respect her husband and support him in his role.
“The wife should have deep respect for her husband.” — Ephesians 5:33
Practical suggestion: ask your spouse how you can be a better partner and be willing to listen and apply.
2. Show Genuine Interest
“Do nothing out of contentiousness or out of egotism, but with humility consider others superior to you.” — Philippians 2:3, 4
Kind words and caring actions strengthen marriage.
“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” — Proverbs 12:18
Practical suggestion: before discussing delicate matters, pray to God and ask for calmness and wisdom.
3. Think as a Team
“For this reason a man will leave his father and his mother and will stick to his wife, and the two will be one flesh.” — Matthew 19:5
Marriage is a partnership. Even with different opinions, the couple should seek unity.
“Plans are established by seeking advice; so if you wage war, obtain guidance.” — Proverbs 20:18
Practical suggestion: share feelings as well as opinions, and consult your spouse before making commitments.
Be Realistic and Optimistic
“For he well knows how we are formed, remembering that we are dust.” — Psalm 103:14
No marriage is perfect. Appreciating your spouse’s good qualities and trusting in Bible principles strengthens the union.
“Let us not give up in doing what is fine, for in due time we will reap if we do not tire out.” — Galatians 6:9
Ask yourself:
Does my spouse feel that I care more about them than about myself?
What did I do today to show that I love and respect my spouse?
